The Power of Goals

We’ve all heard the saying “If people aren’t laughing at your goals then they aren’t big enough.” And, have you ever stopped and really thought about what that means? Better question-why set goals? Just to hit them, and say we hit them? NO!!! Goals are set to push us to become better versions of ourselves. I could set a goal to help 1 family find their dream house before the end of the year; and I would hit that goal fairly quickly. What then? Sit on my hands? So, what is the point of having that goal? What if instead, I set a goal of helping 10 families before December 31st. Now all of the sudden I’m stretching myself; and the world is a better place because of it. A great example of this is this years' Kentucky Wildcats football team. If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that we would play for the SEC East title I would have laughed at you; no joke. And I am a die hard UK fan. But, these men believed it! And they went after ...

What are your 3 tips for success?

The other day I was sitting in a buyer's consultation and at the very end of the conversation I asked the same thing I always do: "Any questions?" I know I know, how original, right? This is obviously a conditioned reflex and I don't typically expect much in return, until the gentleman's nephew raised his hand and said, "I have a question; what are your 3 tips for success?"

First I was shocked.  Then I was wildly impressed.  This kid, who doesn't even appear to be old enough to drive is asking questions I never dreamed of asking at his age.

With no time to think or plan out a response, I blurted out what immediately came to mind:

1. Learn. Learn from books, learn from other people. Never stop educating yourself and growing, because just when you think you've learned everything there is to know, you haven't.

2. If you truly want something, go for it 110%. Stay committed. When other people say you can't, or your "drunk monkey" (aka the negative v ...

It’s Never About Real Estate

Funny because anymore when I meet folks, I tell them my team and I collect people. Real estate is just a means to do that, it’s like the vehicle.

This real estate thing has delivered some of the closest and most amazing people to my life. I was reminded of one of the beautiful couples I have met, called friends and felt the impact they’ve had on my life.

While we are always professional with our clients, we are always moving in a relationship with them. We begin to let them into our world and they let us into theirs. It’s here that these clients become friends and our lives intertwine.

Today I went to see one of those dear friends that I became close with as I sold their home earlier this year. Having met them a few years ago, I quickly found common ground with them in their faith amid other things. So often when I would meet with them, our conversations would be 10 minutes of real estate and 2 hours of life, politics, the Bible, and so many ...

The Good Kind Of Risk

Last week WSG had our yearly “launch” meeting to lay the plan for next year and talk about what we will do differently and how we will grow. During that day I noticed something that happened in our environment. The day started with us sharing our biggest fears with each other. We asked everyone to be vulnerable, and everyone bought in at a very high level. What happened next was amazing!

In lowering our walls we suddenly had an environment where everyone felt empowered to participate and speak whatever thoughts entered their heads. What that yielded was a plethora of amazing ideas that may or may not have made it to the light in any other type of environment. What I noticed happen was no one was afraid to look silly; no one said “This may be a bad idea…..” it was just “what about this ______?” Everyone took RISKS!

The greatest ideas come from when there is no fear of sounding silly; when we let our imaginations wonder. When there ...

Wasting Time Only Harms You

The reason I research productivity is simple. I think that a productive life equals a happy life.

Also, if you’re more productive than average people, you’ll advance faster in your career. You learn more. You do more. And eventually are rewarded more.

And when I talk about productivity, I talk about being effective.

Because productivity doesn’t suggest that you get the right things done. It just means you get a lot of stuff done. But that’s not what matters.

Effectiveness, however, refers to getting the right things done.
And if you want to do your job well, earn money, live a meaningful life, or learn skills, that is what matters the most. Otherwise, you just run around in circles. You might appear busy, but you won’t achieve anything meaningful.
In other words: It’s easy to do useless work. Work that doesn’t bring you closer to the outcomes you desire.
Practically, that means this: You might work for 50 hours a week, but i ...
